Why 5E works for inquiry-based science

Traditional 'I do, we do, you do' instruction starts with the teacher's explanation. 5E starts with student investigation. That order matters: when students have already noticed a pattern (ice melts faster in sunlight), the vocabulary (radiative heating) attaches to a concrete observation instead of floating as an abstract term. Research on 5E instruction shows stronger conceptual understanding and better transfer than traditional lecture-then-lab sequences — which is why most state science standards explicitly reference 5E or its close cousins.
