To learn how to calculate your grade, first check whether your class uses total points, weighted categories, grading periods, or a separate final exam. For a points-based class, divide all points earned by all points possible and multiply by 100. For a weighted class, multiply each category average by its syllabus weight and add the results. Do not average assignment percentages unless every assignment is worth the same number of points.

Quick answer: which grade formula should you use?
Start with the grading policy in your syllabus or LMS. The labels beside your scores determine the calculation:

Before calculating, copy the exact values rather than estimating them from a progress bar. Record whether ungraded work is excluded, counted as zero, or included as a projected score. Also check whether the gradebook already includes the final exam. Those details change the answer more than rounding does.
How to calculate your grade using total points
Use the points method when every assignment contributes according to the number of points it is worth. A 100-point essay then counts twice as much as a 50-point quiz without needing a separate category weight.
Points-based grade = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100
Suppose your gradebook contains these completed assignments:
- Quiz: 42 points earned out of 50 possible.
- Essay: 88 points earned out of 100 possible.
- Project: 76 points earned out of 80 possible.
- Total: 206 points earned out of 230 possible.
The calculation is:
206 ÷ 230 × 100 = 89.57%

Do not calculate 42 ÷ 50, 88 ÷ 100, and 76 ÷ 80 and then take an ordinary average. Those assignment percentages are 84%, 88%, and 95%, whose simple average is 89%. That answer gives the 50-point quiz the same influence as the 100-point essay. Adding points first correctly preserves each assignment's value and gives 89.57%.

What if extra credit is included?
Follow the course policy. If five extra-credit points add to points earned but not points possible, a student with 206 regular points becomes 211 ÷ 230 = 91.74%. If the assignment adds both earned and possible points, add both numbers. Some gradebooks cap the category or overall grade; a hand calculation cannot predict that cap unless the syllabus states it.
How to calculate a weighted grade by category
Use the weighted method when the syllabus says categories count for fixed shares of the course, such as homework 20%, quizzes 30%, and tests 50%. Assignment point values determine the average inside each category, but category weights determine how much each average contributes to the final course grade.
Weighted grade = sum of (category grade × category weight)
Write percentage weights as decimals during the calculation: 20% becomes 0.20, 30% becomes 0.30, and 50% becomes 0.50.
- Homework: 92% × 0.20 = 18.4 grade points.
- Quizzes: 84% × 0.30 = 25.2 grade points.
- Tests: 89% × 0.50 = 44.5 grade points.
- Weighted course grade: 18.4 + 25.2 + 44.5 = 88.1%.

Google Classroom officially supports both total-points and weighted-by-category grading, so do not assume two classes in the same LMS use the same method. What if the category weights do not add to 100% yet?
There are two different questions:
- What is my average across the categories graded so far? Divide the contributions by the weight represented. If only homework and quizzes are available in the example, their contributions total 43.6 across 50% of the course. The normalized current grade is 43.6 ÷ 0.50 = 87.2%.
- What would my official grade be if every missing category were a zero? Keep the absent 50% as zero, producing 43.6%. Only use this interpretation when the gradebook or syllabus says missing work is counted that way.
LMS behavior matters. Google's current Classroom developer documentation explains that weighted categories may be normalized when a category is not present. It also notes that missing submissions default to zero while excused submissions are removed from overall calculations. Check the official Classroom grading concepts and your teacher's policy before treating a blank as a zero.
How to calculate a semester grade
A semester grade is another weighted average, but the components are grading periods rather than assignment categories. Common labels include Quarter 1, Quarter 2, trimester, midterm, final exam, or semester project. There is no universal set of weights.
Semester grade = sum of (grading-period grade × grading-period weight)
For a policy that uses Quarter 1 at 40%, Quarter 2 at 40%, and a final exam at 20%:
- Quarter 1: 88 × 0.40 = 35.2
- Quarter 2: 92 × 0.40 = 36.8
- Final exam: 85 × 0.20 = 17.0
- Semester grade: 35.2 + 36.8 + 17.0 = 89.0%
The math is only valid if the final exam is a separate semester component. If your LMS already includes the exam inside Quarter 2, adding it again would count the same score twice. The semester grade calculator lets you rename each term and enter the exact weights from your handbook.
For an unfinished semester, use projected grades only for planning and label them as estimates. Keep one version with current completed work and a second with projected values. That makes it easier to distinguish “my grade today” from “my grade if I earn 85% on the final.”
How to calculate the score you need on a final exam
When you know your current course grade, target overall grade, and final-exam weight, solve the weighted formula for the unknown final score.
Required final score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight
Convert the final weight to a decimal. If your current grade is 87%, your target is 90%, and the final is worth 25%:
- Coursework keeps 75% of the course: 87 × 0.75 = 65.25.
- The target still needs 90 − 65.25 = 24.75 points from the final.
- Divide by the final weight: 24.75 ÷ 0.25 = 99%.

How to recognize an impossible target
Suppose your current grade is 82%, the target is 90%, and the final is worth 20%:
(90 − 82 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 122%
A required score above 100% means the target cannot be reached through the final alone unless extra credit or another ungraded component can change the result. The best possible course grade with 100% on the final would be 82 × 0.80 + 100 × 0.20 = 85.6%.
A required score below 0% means the target is already secured under the entered assumptions. Still complete the final: a minimum exam score, attendance rule, or automatic-failure policy may apply even when the arithmetic says zero is enough.
How letter grades and GPA calculations differ
A course percentage, letter grade, and GPA are related but not interchangeable:
- Course percentage summarizes scores within one class.
- Letter grade applies the cutoff policy for that class or institution.
- GPA weights each course's grade-point value by its credit hours.
Do not assume that 90% is always an A, that 89.5% always rounds up, or that a B+ always has the same GPA value. Check the syllabus, student handbook, or registrar. Curves, plus/minus scales, mastery systems, dropped scores, and rounding policies can all change the official result.
For GPA, the general structure is:
GPA = total quality points ÷ total GPA credit hours
Quality points equal the institution's grade-point value multiplied by course credit hours. The University of Illinois registrar's official GPA calculation guide shows this method and also documents its own truncation and transcript rules. Those local rules are why a generic percentage-to-GPA conversion should never replace the institution's official calculation.
A five-step grade calculation check
Use this audit before trusting any result:
- Identify the method. Find “total points,” “weighted categories,” or grading-period weights in the syllabus or LMS settings.
- Copy raw values. Use exact earned points, possible points, category averages, and weights. Do not copy a rounded progress graphic.
- Account for blanks. Mark each ungraded item as excluded, zero, excused, or projected according to policy.
- Calculate without early rounding. Keep full precision until the final step, then display two decimal places for planning.
- Compare with the official gradebook. If the result differs, check dropped scores, extra credit, category caps, hidden assignments, final-exam inclusion, and institution-specific rounding before assuming the LMS is wrong.

Common grade-calculation mistakes
- Averaging assignment percentages in a points class. Add points first so larger assignments retain their intended influence.
- Using weights as whole numbers in one place and decimals in another. Multiply by 0.20 or divide 20 by 100 before applying a 20% weight.
- Counting the final twice. Determine whether it is already inside a quarter or category average.
- Treating every blank as zero. An ungraded, missing, excused, and future assignment can have different effects.
- Using category points instead of category averages. In a weighted setup, calculate the average inside each category first, then apply the category weight.
- Rounding every intermediate result. Early rounding can move a borderline answer by several hundredths.

How do I calculate my current grade if some assignments are ungraded?
Follow the gradebook policy. In a total-points class, add only the earned and possible points that currently count. How do I calculate a grade percentage from a score?
