About this tool
Backward design — developed by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe in Understanding by Design (UbD) — plans in reverse: start with the enduring understanding you want students to leave with, then design the summative assessment that would show you they've achieved it, and only then plan the daily lessons that lead there. This generator produces backward design lesson plans and unit plans with all three stages (desired results, assessment evidence, learning plan) fully developed.
Before you plan any lessons, name the enduring understandings (the big, transferable ideas students should remember in five years), the essential questions (the open-ended questions the unit explores), and the knowledge and skills students will gain. This generator produces all four as the first section of the plan. If you can't name the enduring understanding, you haven't done stage 1 yet.

Design the summative assessment before you plan any lessons. What would a student who achieved the enduring understanding be able to do? Build the performance task or assessment that would produce that evidence. Then add the formative checks that will tell you students are on track. This generator produces the summative task plus formative evidence in the assessment section — which most teachers skip or leave for later.
Only after the desired results and assessment evidence are locked do you plan the daily learning activities. The activities serve the assessment, not the other way around. This is what makes backward design feel different from forward planning: you'll find yourself cutting activities that don't feed the performance task, even when they're fun, because they don't produce the evidence of understanding you committed to in stage 2.
