Middle schoolers get squirrelly the minute there's a lull. Effective middle school templates account for this by scheduling an opening bell activity (a warm-up, a quick problem, a do-now) within the first two minutes, moving through direct instruction and a collaborative task in the middle, and closing with an exit ticket in the last three minutes.
