David and Roger Johnson's research identifies five elements that distinguish real cooperative learning from generic group work: positive interdependence (the group succeeds only if everyone contributes), individual accountability (every student is assessed individually), promotive interaction (face-to-face collaboration), social skills (students are taught how to work together), and group processing (groups reflect on how they functioned). Named structures: Jigsaw, Kagan, Think-Pair-Share

Rather than 'work in groups,' strong cooperative learning uses named structures with specific procedures: Jigsaw (each student becomes an expert on one part, then teaches the group), Kagan's Numbered Heads Together (groups of four solve a problem, then one randomly-called student answers for the group), Think-Pair-Share (individual thinking, then paired discussion, then whole-class share). Roles that actually distribute work

Group roles work when they distribute cognitive and physical work meaningfully: recorder, facilitator, reporter, resource manager, encourager. They fail when they become nominal labels that don't change what each kid does. This generator produces plans with role descriptions that have specific deliverables — what the recorder records, when the facilitator intervenes — so roles are functional rather than decorative.
