About this tool
Direct instruction (DI) is a teacher-led, highly scaffolded approach that works especially well for skill acquisition in math, phonics, and explicit content instruction. The structure is tight: the teacher models a specific procedure, leads guided practice with immediate correction, then releases students to independent practice. This generator produces DI-style lesson plans with the pacing, teacher moves, and correction protocols that make DI effective.
Effective DI depends on four things: a clear, specific skill target (not a vague concept); teacher modeling with think-aloud language that makes the procedure explicit; guided practice with immediate error correction before misconceptions harden; and high-frequency, low-stakes formative checks so the teacher catches misunderstandings fast. This generator builds all four into the plan structure rather than assuming the teacher will add them.

DI is strongest for teaching procedural skills: phonics decoding, arithmetic algorithms, spelling patterns, grammatical conventions, chemistry equation balancing. It's weaker for teaching conceptual understanding, open-ended inquiry, or creative application — those need different frameworks (5E for inquiry, workshop for writing, UbD for conceptual transfer). A good teacher uses DI for the skills that need it and other frameworks for everything else.
Direct instruction, Gradual Release (I Do / We Do / You Do), and Madeline Hunter's ITIP all share the same core: teacher models, guides, then releases.
