About this tool
Fry words are the 1,000 most common words in printed English, compiled by Edward Fry from analysis of written American English. Learn the first 100 Fry words and you can read 50% of any page. Learn all 1,000 and you can read 90%. That's an enormous return on a finite list. This page has the full Fry word list organized into the four standard grade-bands most districts use: Fry first 100 (grade 1 target), 101-300 (grade 2), 301-600 (grades 3-4), 601-1000 (grades 4-5). The generator above builds grade-calibrated practice worksheets from any band - trace, write, sentence-completion, or flashcard format. Use Fry words as a complement to or replacement for Dolch sight words once your students move past 3rd grade.
Each 100-word Fry band has a distinct character. The first 100 is almost entirely function words (the, of, and, to, a, in, is, you, that, it). The 201-300 band still has function words but starts mixing in concrete content words (water, little, air, animal, line). By the 601-1000 range you're deep into academic vocabulary (equation, probably, material, sudden, continent). The frequency drops but the words get richer.
Fry 1-100: the, of, and, to, a, in, is, you, that, it (function words)
Fry 101-200: get, like, him, into, time, has, look, two, more, write
Fry 201-400: animal, line, little, work, know, place, year, live, me, back
Fry 401-600: paper, together, group, often, run, important, children, side
Fry 601-1000: material, probably, equation, question, remember, sudden
The spelling worksheet generator above pulls from a built-in Fry word bank. Pick a band (e.g., 201-300), select a format (trace, write, sentence), and download. Most teachers run 15-20 Fry words per week, with a Friday recognition check. Daily exposure matters more than worksheet volume - 5 minutes of flashcards beats 30 minutes of one-off worksheets every time.
Once your students have mastered the 220 Dolch words (usually by the end of 2nd or early 3rd grade), Fry is where you go next. Fry keeps producing high-frequency, high-utility words through the Fry-1000 mark - a scale Dolch doesn't reach. If you teach upper-elementary, Fry is the backbone of your sight-word program.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
