About this tool
Third grade is when spelling gets harder in a specific, predictable way: r-controlled vowels and consonant digraphs. The 'ar' in 'park', the 'or' in 'storm', the 'ir' in 'stir', the 'sh' in 'shop', the 'ch' in 'chess' - these don't sound like what you'd guess from the individual letters, so 3rd graders have to build a new layer of pattern knowledge. The 3rd grade spelling words on this page focus on exactly those patterns, plus two-syllable words, compound words, and 3rd grade Dolch sight words. Use the generator above to build weekly tests, pattern-focused practice worksheets, or a spelling bee list. These 3rd grade spelling word lists align with most district curriculum maps and the Common Core Foundational Skills standards for grade 3.
In grades K-2, students learned that vowels are either short ('cat') or long ('cake'). In 3rd grade they meet a third category: r-controlled. The 'a' in 'park' isn't short or long - it's 'ar'. Same for 'or' in 'corn', 'er' in 'her', 'ir' in 'bird', 'ur' in 'burn'. There are five r-controlled patterns and most 3rd grade curricula cover all five across the year. Words like 'park', 'stir', 'sport', and 'fern' are the workhorses.
R-controlled: park, barn, star, corn, horse, bird, fern, burn
Consonant digraphs: shop, ship, chess, chip, thin, thick, whip, when
Two-syllable: rabbit, sudden, winter, garden, number
Compound words: sunset, bedroom, football, playground
Consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh, ph) spell a single sound with two letters. Third graders who miss these write 'sip' for 'ship' or 'fone' for 'phone'. The spelling worksheet generator above can build a sheet that isolates one digraph per worksheet - 10 'sh' words Monday, 10 'ch' words Tuesday - which produces faster mastery than mixed lists.
By 3rd grade, reading shifts from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn'. Students encounter multi-syllable content-area words (habitat, climate, pioneer) they need to both decode and spell. Pair your weekly pattern list with 2 or 3 content-area words from social studies or science, and you've built a spelling program that supports the rest of the curriculum.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
