What is a spelling test generator?
A spelling test generator turns a word list into a ready-to-give test, with an item for each word and an answer key. By default, each item is a short sentence with a blank, so you can read the word and sentence aloud as a dictation test.
Testing words in a sentence
Saying a word alone ('rain') checks recall. A sentence ('The rain soaked my backpack.') also tells students which word you mean, which matters for homophones like rain, rein and reign. Say the word, read the sentence, and say the word again; students write it on the answer lines.

Paste up to 40 words per test, or describe the list ('10 long-a words with ai and ay for 2nd grade') and check the words the generator picks. Typical weekly list lengths:
1st grade: 8 to 10 words
3rd grade: 10 to 15 words
5th grade and up: 15 to 20 words
Pair the test with practice earlier in the week
Use the same list for a practice sheet on Monday or Tuesday (fill-in-the-blank sentences, unscrambling, or alphabetical order) and give the test on Friday, so students have written each word several times first.
