About this tool
Spelling bee words for adults aren't just the kid list with harder vocabulary — the whole design brief shifts. Adult bees run at office parties, library fundraisers, alumni events, and the handful of serious adult spelling leagues (like the annual San Francisco and Brooklyn adult bees), and the word list has to hold the room. Too easy and the whole thing is over in eight minutes; too obscure and everyone taps out in round one and you've killed the night. The list below is tuned for adult bees: archaic vocabulary that shows up in crossword puzzles and literary fiction ('perspicacious', 'quixotic', 'obstreperous'), scientific and medical terms ('myocardium', 'photosynthesis', 'onomatopoeia'), loanwords that have entered English with tricky spellings intact ('hors d'oeuvre', 'weltschmerz', 'connoisseur'), and the infamous Scripps championship-tier words that show up at the finals on ESPN. Every word includes a pronunciation guide, part of speech, and a definition an adult moderator can read cold. The generator above assembles a full packet — warm-up round, main rounds, championship tier, tiebreakers — in about a minute.
Adults don't want to feel condescended to, and most adult spellers have a working vocabulary that dwarfs an eighth grader's. A bee that asks executives to spell 'rhythm' and 'conscience' is going to feel like a grade-school exercise. The fix is threefold: lean into adult-recognizable vocabulary (the SAT words and crossword puzzle stalwarts), include loanwords where the spelling is counterintuitive to anyone who hasn't seen the word written out, and sprinkle in archaic or literary vocabulary readers encounter in fiction but rarely write. That combination produces a bee where contestants actually think before spelling.
SAT-and-beyond vocabulary: obsequious, perspicacious, idiosyncrasy, pulchritude
French loanwords: bourgeoisie, connoisseur, hors d'oeuvre, rendezvous, silhouette
German loanwords: weltschmerz, zeitgeist, schadenfreude, kindergarten
Scientific/medical: onomatopoeia, ophthalmologist, myocardium, mitochondria
Archaic and literary: quixotic, obstreperous, antediluvian, sesquipedalian
Adult bees typically run 45-90 minutes depending on contestant count. The most common format is 'Scripps-style but compressed': three to four rounds, written rather than oral for the early rounds (to move faster through a large group), oral for the final rounds. Many adult bees add a team-based round where three-person teams collaborate on a challenging word — keeps the room engaged when individual elimination thins the contestants. Serve drinks before, not during. Have a single designated pronouncer and a single judge; challenges get resolved by dictionary consultation, and Merriam-Webster Unabridged is the standard reference.
The generator above has presets for 'office holiday party' (lighter difficulty, more humor — 'doppelganger', 'flibbertigibbet', 'hullabaloo'), 'literary fundraiser' (harder, more archaic — vocabulary readers of Dickens and Austen would recognize), and 'charity competition' (balanced, with celebrity-sponsor-friendly words). All three packets include a moderator script, a pronouncer reference, and a tiebreaker bank. For a 20-adult bee plan on 80-100 words; for a charity gala with 40+ contestants across team rounds, plan 200+.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”

Yes. The Nationally Televised Scripps bee is for kids, but adult bees have grown steadily — the Brooklyn Adult Spelling Bee (running since 1994), the San Francisco Adult Spelling Bee, the DC and Chicago adult circuits, plus dozens of library and trivia-league bees. Most require nothing beyond showing up and paying a small entry fee; serious contestants prep from Merriam-Webster's unabridged word list.
