A 1st grade spelling test is less about proving mastery and more about building the habit: hear a word, hold it in your head, and write it down. At this age, test design matters more than test difficulty. Lines need to be big enough for emerging handwriting. Word counts need to stay at 8 to 10. Sentence prompts need to be short and concrete. Calibrated for first-grade handwriting

Most 1st graders write letters that are 1/4 to 3/8 inch tall, with imperfect midline control. A standard-ruled line ignores the midline and produces floaty letters. Our 1st grade spelling test uses primary lined paper with a dotted midline so 'c', 'a', 'o' sit correctly in the bottom half while 't', 'l', 'h' stretch to the top. That single layout change reduces errors-that-look-like-spelling-errors but are really handwriting errors.
