Word families are the foundation
A first grader who spells 'bat' can spell 'cat', 'hat', 'mat' and 'sat': one pattern, many words. Group weekly words by rime (-at, -it, -op, -ug, -en) so each week builds on the last.

Short i: sit, hit, pig, big, wig, fin
Short o: hop, top, mop, log, dog, pot
Short u: cup, pup, bug, hug, sun, run

Sight words that don't follow the patterns
Some 1st grade words can't be spelled from their sounds: 'the', 'said', 'come', 'was', 'of'. Ask the generator to mix a few of these with pattern words on the same sheet. The Dolch 1st grade list (after, again, could, every, once, were and others) is a common source.
Classroom pacing
Many teachers cover one short-vowel family a week plus three to five sight words. Later in the year come blends (st-, bl-, tr-), digraphs (sh, ch, th; RF.1.3.a) and silent-e words (cake, bike; RF.1.3.c).
