About this tool
First grade spelling is where reading and writing finally click together. A 1st grader who can spell 'cat', 'sit', 'run', and 'big' has internalized short-vowel CVC patterns, which unlocks hundreds of words with identical structure. The 1st grade spelling words lists on this page cover exactly that bridge: CVC short-vowel families (-at, -it, -op, -ug, -en), the first-grade Dolch sight words (about 41 words including 'come', 'little', 'make'), and a handful of high-utility consonant blends (st-, bl-, tr-). Use the generator above to build trace-the-word, write-it-three-times, or use-in-a-sentence worksheets from these 1st grade spelling word lists. It's calibrated for emerging writers: larger print, primary lined paper, and word counts that don't overwhelm.
A first grader who spells 'bat' can spell 'cat', 'hat', 'mat', 'rat', 'sat', 'fat', and 'pat' - seven words for the price of one. That's why CVC word families sit at the center of 1st grade spelling. This page's word lists group by rime (-at, -it, -op, -ug, -en, -in, -ot) so practice compounds. Add short-vowel readers alongside and you're stacking decoding with encoding.
Short-a: cat, hat, bat, rat, map, sad
Short-i: sit, hit, pig, big, wig, fin
Short-o: hop, top, mop, log, dog, pot
Short-u: cup, pup, bug, hug, sun, run
Short-e: bed, red, pen, net, hen, web
Some 1st grade spelling words don't follow CVC rules - 'the', 'said', 'come', 'was'. Those have to be memorized as visual wholes, which is why they live on the Dolch 1st grade list. The spelling worksheet generator at the top mixes CVC pattern words with irregular sight words in the same worksheet, so students learn both kinds of encoding in one sitting.
Most 1st grade teachers cycle one short-vowel family per week (short-a week, short-i week) and sprinkle 3 to 5 sight words alongside. By mid-year, students should be writing full CVC sentences. By year-end, they're blending (st-, bl-, tr-) and reading short vowel-consonant-e patterns (cake, bike). Build the weekly list in the generator and print five practice pages for the week.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”

Five to eight is typical for the first half of the year; eight to ten by spring. More than ten and retention drops sharply at this age.
