About this tool
Fifth grade spelling pivots from rule-based English morphology to classical roots. A 5th grader who learns that 'photo' means 'light' and 'graph' means 'write' can decode and spell 'photograph', 'photographer', 'photography', 'telegraph', 'autograph', 'biography', 'geography' - a tree of words from two Greek roots. The 5th grade spelling words on this page focus on high-frequency Greek roots (photo, graph, bio, geo, tele, phon, scope, therm) and Latin roots (dict, port, struct, spect, tract, scribe), plus advanced affixes and multisyllabic academic vocabulary. Use the generator above to build root-of-the-week worksheets, pre-algebra and science crossover lists, or end-of-year cumulative reviews. These 5th grade spelling word lists are calibrated for middle-school readiness and map to most district curriculum maps.
English has about 150,000 common words. Learning 30 Greek and Latin roots unlocks the spelling of roughly 15,000 of them. 'Bio' (life) + 'logy' (study of) = biology. 'Photo' (light) + 'synthesis' (putting together) = photosynthesis. A 5th grader who can decompose these words reads a 6th grade science textbook without hitting a wall of unfamiliar multisyllabic terms. This is the single highest-leverage move in upper-elementary spelling.
Greek roots: photo (light), graph (write), bio (life), geo (earth), tele (far), phon (sound), scope (look), therm (heat)
Latin roots: dict (speak), port (carry), struct (build), spect (look), tract (pull), scribe (write)
Multisyllabic: photograph, biography, thermometer, dictation, instruction
Advanced affixes: -tion, -sion, -able, -ible, inter-, trans-, sub-
By 5th grade, spelling should stop being an isolated 20-minute block and start supporting science, social studies, and math vocabulary directly. The spelling worksheet generator above lets you paste in your current unit's vocabulary - 'democracy', 'constitution', 'photosynthesis', 'quadrilateral' - and build a spelling test around them. That turns spelling into content reinforcement.
A 5th grader who finishes the year spelling 'photograph', 'biography', 'instruction', 'describe', 'interrupt', and 'transportation' correctly has the morphological foundation for middle-school science and ELA. Use the generator's cumulative review preset in May to build an end-of-year assessment that pulls from the whole year's roots.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
