About this tool
A 2nd grade spelling test should target long-vowel vowel teams and consonant blends - the patterns 2nd graders are actively acquiring. The classic 10-word test works well at this grade: ten pattern words, each presented in a sentence, scored out of 100. This spelling test for 2nd grade uses standard-ruled lines (by 2nd grade, most students have moved past primary lined paper), 10 numbered rows, and a teacher read-aloud script with slightly richer sentences than 1st grade. Pair it with a week of pattern-focused practice (all -ain words, all -ee/-ea words, all bl-/br- blends) and Friday's test becomes a genuine mastery check. Build a 2nd grade spelling test in under a minute with the generator above.
A 2nd grade spelling test that mixes 'rain', 'jump', 'because', 'friend', and 'sheep' tests nothing coherent - each word is a different pattern. A test with 'rain', 'train', 'paid', 'chain', 'mail', 'gain', 'pain', 'wait', 'laid', 'afraid' tests whether the student has internalized the 'ai' spelling for long-a. Pattern-focused tests produce signal; random-word tests produce noise. The generator above defaults to pattern-focused if you pick a grade and vowel pattern.
10 words, all one pattern (e.g., all long-a 'ai')
Sentence prompts that use the word in context
Standard ruled lines (graduated from primary paper)
Score out of 10 (or 100 if scaling)
By 2nd grade, students use sentence context to disambiguate homophones ('pain' vs 'pane', 'mail' vs 'male'). If you just read 'mail' alone, a student writing 'male' isn't wrong about spelling - they're wrong about which word you meant. The spelling worksheet generator above pairs every word with a clarifying sentence in the teacher read-aloud script.
Monday introduce the pattern with 10 words and a sort activity. Tuesday/Wednesday practice (write + sentence). Thursday partner quiz. Friday 10-word test. Save the tests - a May portfolio of eight months of 2nd grade spelling tests is gold for parent conferences and promotion decisions.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”

Ten points per word is the standard - simple, transparent, easy for students to understand. Partial credit (say, 5 points for one letter wrong) is more effort than it's worth at this age.
