About this tool
1st grade word problems are short, concrete, and within 20. A squirrel collects 8 acorns, then finds 5 more — how many now? A kid has 14 crayons and gives 6 to a friend — how many left? This 1st grade math word problems generator writes exactly that level of problem, with the reading load kept light so the math is what kids work on. Every page refresh produces new scenarios — toys, animals, classroom objects, snacks — and every worksheet ships with an answer key. Tap the generator above, prompt "1st grade math word problems, 12 questions, animals theme," and a printable appears instantly.
CCSS 1.OA.A.1 asks students to use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. That means four situation types — add-to, take-from, put-together, and compare — with unknowns in any position (result, change, or start). The hardest variant is compare, because "how many more" doesn't sound like subtraction to a first grader.
Sentences stay short — usually two to three per problem. Vocabulary is controlled: "has," "gives," "finds," "eats," "leaves." Numbers stay within 20 for core practice and can push to 30 for stretch work. You can request start-unknown problems ("Maya had some stickers, got 4 more, now has 11 — how many did she start with?") specifically, which tend to be the hardest type for first graders.
Add-to and take-from with result unknown
Put-together/take-apart with total or part unknown
Compare problems ("how many more, how many fewer")
Start-unknown variants for stretch
Print a 10-problem page for morning work, read the problems aloud while students solve along, or send home a set for parent-assisted practice. Pair with the addition word problems generator narrowed to within-20 settings if you want pure addition practice without the subtraction mix.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
