How to set up an algebra word problem
An algebra word problem describes a situation that students translate into an equation and then solve: 'Two consecutive integers add to 45' becomes x + (x + 1) = 45, so the integers are 22 and 23. This generator writes them in the standard families for 8th grade through Algebra 2, with an answer key.
Classic word-problem families
Each family has a setup students can learn. Age: 'Sarah is 3 times as old as her brother. In 5 years she will be twice his age.' With b for his age, 3b + 5 = 2(b + 5), so he is 5 and she is 15.
Distance-rate-time: equal travel times give 30/(12 + c) = 18/(12 − c), so c = 3
