About this tool
Third grade is the multiplication-and-division year — the math standards spend most of the year on building fluency with facts through 10×10, then introducing fractions as numbers in the spring. The 3rd grade math problems generator above produces calibrated practice for the full Common Core 3.OA, 3.NBT, 3.NF, and 3.MD scope: multiplication and division facts within 100, fraction concepts (unit fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions on a number line), area and perimeter, time to the minute, and multi-step word problems combining all four operations. Pick the cluster, choose your format, generate. Print-ready, with answer keys.
Third grade marks the cognitive jump from additive thinking to multiplicative thinking. A problem like '6 students each have 4 pencils' isn't a 2nd-grade problem with bigger numbers — it requires students to understand groups-of structures, which is qualitatively different from counting-on or take-away thinking. The generator produces problems that respect this jump: multiplication situations are framed as equal groups, arrays, or area; division situations distinguish between partitive (sharing equally) and quotative (measuring out) interpretations. Fraction problems use the third-grade-specific 'fraction as a number on the number line' framing rather than just 'pie pieces' visuals.
Multiplication and division within 100 (3.OA.7 fluency standard)
Equal groups, arrays, and area-model multiplication problems
Unit fractions and equivalent fractions on the number line
Two-step word problems involving the four operations (3.OA.8)
Operations & Algebraic Thinking (3.OA): multiplication and division facts within 100, properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive), two-step word problems. Number & Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT): rounding to nearest 10 and 100, multi-digit addition/subtraction within 1000, multiplying one-digit by multiples of 10. Number & Operations - Fractions (3.NF): unit fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with same numerator or denominator. Measurement & Data (3.MD): area, perimeter, time to the minute, mass and volume, scaled bar graphs. Geometry (3.G): partitioning shapes into equal areas. Each cluster has its own template.
Common Core 3.OA.7 expects 3rd graders to know all products of two single-digit numbers from memory by end of year. Building that takes 6-8 months of daily 5-minute drill plus weekly application practice. The generator handles both — request 'multiplication facts 6s and 7s, 30 problems' for the drill, then 'multiplication word problems with 6s and 7s' for the application. Use a fluency tracker (color in mastered facts on a 12×12 grid) so students see progress, and rotate which fact set you focus on weekly. By April, most students have 80-90% of facts memorized — the generator's mixed-set worksheets help close the remaining gaps.
How it works
Operation(s), grade level, format (drill or word problems), and item count.
Lock a context (sports, animals, food). Set difficulty (easy, medium, hard).
Copy the text or print directly. Toggle the answer key for teacher vs. student version.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”

Yes — name the assessment in the prompt ('STAAR 3rd grade math practice', 'NYS 3rd grade math test'). The generator matches item formats and topic distribution to that test. For high-stakes test prep, always cross-reference released items.
