About this tool
By 3rd and 4th grade, students have to see multiplication and division as inverse operations living in the same problem family. Mixed word problems force that recognition: is this scenario asking for a product (4 groups of 6) or a quotient (24 split into 4 equal groups)? This multiplication and division word problems generator rotates between both structures at the number range you pick. For 3rd grade, numbers stay inside the basic fact tables; for 5th grade, you get multi-digit products and two-digit divisors. Use the generator above — prompt "4th grade mixed multiplication and division word problems, 15 questions" — and a fresh worksheet drops with an answer key.
CCSS 3.OA.B.6 asks students to understand division as an unknown-factor problem. Mixing multiplication and division word problems on one page is how you build the fact that 4 × 7 = 28 and 28 ÷ 4 = 7 describe the same relationship from different directions. Students who only practice these separately often don't connect them until a test blindsides them.
3rd grade sticks to equal-groups and array contexts inside the 12×12 fact world. 4th grade introduces multi-digit multiplication (like 23 × 6) and long-division contexts (like 148 ÷ 4). 5th grade adds decimals and multi-step problems. You can also request specific problem structures — pure equal-groups, pure comparison, or a mix.

Best deployed at the end of a multiplication-or-division unit to check whether students can discriminate between the two. Also strong for intervention: when students can divide procedurally but not identify division situations, this is the tool. Combine with the multiplication word problems generator for single-operation warm-up before mixing.
How it works
Operation(s), grade level, format (drill or word problems), and item count.
Lock a context (sports, animals, food). Set difficulty (easy, medium, hard).
Copy the text or print directly. Toggle the answer key for teacher vs. student version.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
