What are one-step and two-step equations?

A one-step equation takes one inverse operation to solve, such as x + 6 = 14 or 5x = 35, and a two-step equation takes two, such as 3x + 4 = 19. This generator writes simple algebra problems: one- and two-step linear equations with small integer coefficients and integer solutions.

What simple means here

In these forms, a, b, and c are small integers and x is an integer. 6.EE.B.7 covers one-step equations and 7.EE.B.4 covers two-step equations of the form px + q = r.

  • One step, add or subtract: x + b = c, x − b = c

  • One step, multiply or divide: ax = c, x/a = c

  • Two steps: ax + b = c

  • 2x − 5 = 9: add 5 (2x = 14), divide by 2 (x = 7)

  • Check: 2(7) − 5 = 9

Settings you can ask for

Choose the equation type (one-step, two-step, or both), the coefficient range (1 to 5 for the gentlest set, 1 to 10 for standard), and the solution range. Ask for negative coefficients and solutions once students are comfortable with positives.

When to use it

In the first week of Algebra 1, late in 7th grade, or for a student who needs a few quick wins. For vocabulary and expressions first, use basic algebra problems; for longer equations, use algebra practice problems.

How the math problem generator works

  1. 1

    Describe the set

The topic and the format, such as two-step equations or fraction word problems about cooking.

  2. 2

    Set the details

Grade, difficulty, and number of problems. It usually takes 10 to 20 seconds.

  3. 3

    Check and print

Work a few problems yourself, then print the student copy and the answer key.

What teachers say

Teachers across subjects, from AP history to astrophysics, on grading with GradeWithAI.

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”
Rebecca Ford

Astrophysics
“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”
Ken Brenan

Computer Science
“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”
Aaron Braskin

Ask for the range you want. 'Coefficients 1 to 5' gives the gentlest set; 'coefficients 1 to 10' is a standard first set.

Only if you ask. Add 'include negative coefficients and solutions' to the description once students can solve the positive versions.

Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division (including long division), fractions, decimals, ratios, percents, pre-algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, and geometry.

Yes. Ask for word problems in the description, and add a context such as sports, animals, or food if you like.

Pick the grade, which sets the kind of numbers and operations, then choose easy, medium, or hard.

Yes. Every problem has an answer, printed on a separate page. Work a few problems yourself before handing the set out, since AI-generated math can contain mistakes.

No. It writes problems. To grade completed work, upload it to GradeWithAI, which reads handwritten math and gives partial credit under your rubric or answer key.
