Hard algebra problems take several steps and some judgment, such as equations with fractions on both sides or systems where no variable is isolated. Where the difficulty comes from
Algebra problems get hard through length (more steps), arithmetic (fractions, negatives, radicals), and structure (spotting the factoring pattern or the right elimination). A worked example:
Solve (2x − 1)/3 − (x + 2)/4 = 1
Multiply by 12: 4(2x − 1) − 3(x + 2) = 12
Expand: 8x − 4 − 3x − 6 = 12
Combine: 5x − 10 = 12, so 5x = 22 and x = 22/5
