Varied contexts, every problem set

The word-problem generator varies the scenario — sports, animals, food, measurement, time — across every item so students aren't pattern-matching. Specify a context (sports, ancient Egypt, zoo) or let the generator vary.

  • Varied real-world contexts per item

  • Optional theme lock (sports, animals, food)

  • Two-step and multi-step problems

  • Balanced mix across the set

About this tool

Long Division Problems Generator — free AI generator

Long division is the place where 4th and 5th graders trip on procedure — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat. This long division problems generator produces printable pages of stepped problems with the bracket already drawn and room to show each step underneath. You set the shape: 3-digit dividend by 1-digit divisor, 4-digit by 2-digit, with or without remainders, whole-number or decimal. Every click writes fresh divisors and dividends, so tomorrow's warm-up has nothing in common with today's. Use the generator above to spin up a worksheet — prompt something like "15 long division problems, 4-digit dividend, 2-digit divisor, with remainders" and the PDF drops in seconds, answer key included.

Where long division lives in the standards

Long division formally enters in CCSS 4.NBT.B.6 (up to four-digit dividends, one-digit divisors) and expands through 5.NBT.B.6 to include two-digit divisors. By 6.NS.B.2 students apply the full standard algorithm fluently. Schools that treat it as a rote drill miss the point — the algorithm is students' first sustained encounter with an iterative multi-step procedure, which is why we bother.

How problem shape is controlled

Specify divisor digits (1, 2, or 3), dividend digits (2 through 5), and remainder behavior (always, never, or mixed). For newcomers, request divisors from 2–9 only and dividends that divide cleanly. For review, turn on remainders and mix in divisors like 12, 24, and 37. For decimal extension, ask for dividends with decimal points or remainders expressed as decimals carried to the hundredths.

  • 2-digit ÷ 1-digit introductory problems

  • 3-digit ÷ 1-digit with remainders for 4th grade

  • 4-digit ÷ 2-digit for 5th grade mastery

  • Decimal extensions where quotients extend past the decimal point

Workflow uses

One page a day across a long division unit is the standard pattern — ten problems, 15 minutes, circulate and spot the students who skip the "bring down" step. Use a clean set (no remainders) for week-one introduction, then add remainders in week two. Chain with the division word problems generator so students see the algorithm inside real scenarios, not just as naked arithmetic.

More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.

I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.

GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.
