About this tool
Division word problems ask two very different questions depending on how they're written. "12 cookies shared equally among 4 friends" is partitive — we know the number of groups. "12 cookies given out 4 at a time" is measurement (quotative) — we know the size of each group. Kids have to recognize both. This division word problems generator writes both flavors across grades 3–6, calibrated to the number size that matches each grade. You can request one specific type or mix them. Launch the generator above with a prompt like "5th grade division word problems with two-digit divisors, 15 problems" and a printable page appears with its answer key.
The distinction shows up in CCSS 3.OA.A.2: sometimes we're splitting a whole into a known number of equal parts (partitive), sometimes we're asking how many parts of a known size fit (measurement). Both map to the same arithmetic, but the mental models differ. Students who only practice one type stumble when a problem shifts structure.
At 3rd grade, dividends stay within 100 with one-digit divisors. At 4th, dividends push to four digits with interpretation-of-remainder questions (does the remainder mean another bus, or a fraction of a sandwich?). At 5th and 6th, you see two-digit divisors, fractional quotients, and multi-step problems where division is one of several operations. Contexts — pizza slices, road-trip miles per gallon, party favors per guest — rotate so no two pages match.

Multi-step problems blending division with addition or subtraction
These earn their keep as small-group reteach when kids confuse divisor and dividend, or as end-of-unit assessments covering both division structures. Run one page alongside the multiplication word problems generator so students meet related pairs (3 × 4 = 12 paired with 12 ÷ 4 = 3).

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
