Word problems that don't repeat
The word-problem generator varies the scenario — sports, animals, food, measurement, time — across every item so students aren't pattern-matching. Specify a context (sports, ancient Egypt, zoo) or let the generator vary.
Varied real-world contexts per item
Optional theme lock (sports, animals, food)
Two-step and multi-step problems
Balanced mix across the set

Maya planted 8 rows of sunflowers. Each row has 12 plants. How many sunflowers did she plant?
At the zoo, 3 pandas eat 4 kg of bamboo each per day. How much bamboo do they eat in a week?
A soccer team scored 36 goals over 6 games. What was their average per game?

About this tool
The single hardest jump in early-elementary math isn't the arithmetic — it's deciding which operation to use. When a worksheet is labeled "Addition," every student adds. Mix addition and subtraction on one page and you find out who actually read the problem. These mixed addition and subtraction word problems force that decision on every item. Calibrated from 1st grade (within 20) through 5th grade (multi-digit, multi-step, with money), the generator rotates join, separate, and compare structures so students can't pattern-match their way out. Run the generator above with a prompt like "2nd grade mixed addition and subtraction word problems, 15 questions" and the worksheet is ready to print.
CCSS explicitly calls for mixed-operation word problems starting in 1.OA.A.1 and escalating to 3.OA.D.8 (multi-step with any operation). Research on near-transfer shows that students who only practice one operation at a time perform significantly worse on mixed assessments. Mixing forces the student to read for structure, not just numbers.
You control the ratio — 50/50, weighted toward one operation, or fully mixed. Problem types rotate through add-to, take-from, put-together, and compare structures. Number ranges step by grade: within 20 for 1st, within 100 for 2nd, three-digit for 3rd, with money and decimals for 4th–5th. Themes rotate, too — sports, cooking, transportation, classroom — so no context repeats.
Balanced addition/subtraction mix for fair assessment
Compare problems that require subtraction to find difference
Two-step problems combining join and separate actions
Money and measurement contexts for 4th–5th grade
Use mixed problem sets as the culminating assessment in a word-problem unit, as Friday review after a week of single-operation practice, or as the assessment item when you want data on whether students can distinguish situation types. Pair with the math word problems generator for an all-operations review.
How it works
Operation(s), grade level, format (drill or word problems), and item count.
Lock a context (sports, animals, food). Set difficulty (easy, medium, hard).
Copy the text or print directly. Toggle the answer key for teacher vs. student version.

“For Chadwick users, GradeWithAI has improved feedback efficiency and effectiveness, as it is grounded in existing platforms and is highly adaptable.”

“More impressive though is that it corrects student answers not simply using a pre-written answer, but by following the thought process they've pursued.”

“I've really enjoyed using the GradeWithAI program. It saves me a ton of time, especially when I have class sizes of 35 or 36 students times five.”

“GradeWithAI doesn't just grade. It gives the student reasoning as to why every point is awarded or not awarded. That is a very valuable thing for the students.”

“GradeWithAI [provides] students with timely individualized feedback on their homework assignments and formative assessments. This is a job that is virtually impossible for a teacher to do on a regular basis.”

“Students have also appreciated the consistency and immediacy of the feedback I can provide through GradeWithAI. This has enabled them to make necessary corrections and achieve their desired scores on any assignment.”
